Day 1 – Arrival in Norway & Night Sky Viewing
Fly to Tromsø and transfer to our hotel in Mestervik, a picturesque village which features stunning views of the unspoilt local scenery and clear fjord waters. Here, we check in to the Malangen Resort for the first of our two-night stay.
After dinner at our hotel, there’s the option to join Pete Lawrence for an informative presentation on the Northern Lights and the best way to photograph them. After the presentation and subject to suitable weather conditions, we go outside and explore the night sky with Pete’s help while we wait in anticipation for the aurora to appear. An “Aurora watch” will be in operation until at least midnight for those who wish to be woken up to see them!
Day 2 – Mestervik & Night Sky Viewing
After breakfast, we experience a day at leisure in Mestervik with a selection of optional activities for you to make the most of this gorgeous village in a way that best suits you. Choose to traverse the frosty landscape in a variety of seasonally-appropriate ways such as dog sledding through the white silence, skiing through snowy forests, learning traditional trapping skills on snowshoes or speeding through the scenery on a snowmobile trek. Or if you’re seeking a calmer time, you can opt to enjoy a day of Sàmi storytelling and feeding reindeer.
After our included dinner, there’s the option to join a further presentation with Pete Lawrence. Under his expert eye, we wait for the aurora to make an appearance. A Northern Lights watch will again operate until at least midnight for those who wish to be woken up to watch them.
Day 3 – Transfer to Tromsø
After breakfast we check out of our hotel and spend some more time at leisure in Mestervik where there’s another opportunity to partake in the optional activities listed above before we make our way to Northern Scandinavia’s largest city, Tromsø where we check into our hotel. This modern city offers many striking views of the surrounding glacial landscape which offer near-ideal conditions for observing the Northern Lights.
In the evening we have the option to join an Aurora Dinner Cruise around the Tromsø fjord where we have the opportunity to use our newly-learned aurora-spotting knowledge as we gaze at the sky while enjoying a delicious dinner provided by a local restaurant.
Day 4 – Tromsø at leisure
Today we spend the day at leisure in Tromsø where we can see all the wonderful sights the city has to offer. Discover the area’s polar heritage at The Polar Museum where there are plenty of artefacts from its time as an arctic fur-trapping community, or take the cable car to the ledge of the Storsteinen mountain where you can soak up the astonishing view from 421m above sea level. There’s also a range of optional activities available, including an arctic fjord cruise and a special Sàmi reindeer camp complete with dinner and sledding.
Day 5 – Departure
We check out of our hotel and transfer to Tromsø airport for our return flight home.
Please note: as the Northern Lights is a natural phenomenon, we cannot guarantee a successful sighting.
